HYSA Arsenal U12B Blue and U12G Gold both won their flight championships at the MYSA Showcase Cup, which took place June 28-29 at the Siebel Fields in Great Falls. Both teams were flighted into the "red" (2nd) flight based on regular season MYSA League results.
Mark Etchart's U12B Blue team got off to a fast start on Saturday, defeating the Flathead Force 9-2 and Magic City SC U11B White 4-0. Arsenal was matched up on Sunday in the flight Championship game with a Livingston YSA Raiders team who had drawn and defeated two Magic City SC teams on Saturday. A quick start put Arsenal out to a 1-0 lead early in the final match, but Livingston clawed back to tie the game at 1-1 right before half time. Arsenal proved to simply be too much and eventually wore down the Raiders and scored midway through the second half for a 2-1 final.
On the girls' side, Jamul Hahn's group put an exclamation point on a successful season by going 4-0 on their final weekend, including an exciting penalty kick shootout win in the semi-finals. In group play, the girls defeated Magic City U11G White 3-1 and the Flathead Rapids 4-1 before meeting the host club, Electric City SC, in the semi-finals. The game was tied at 1 after regulation and immidiately went to shot from the mark. After missing their first shot and falling behind early, Arsenal battled back and tied the shootout on their 5th and final kick before winning in sudden death shots. The championship game proved to be a nail-biter as well, with Arsenal taking a 3-0 halftime lead before being forced to hold off a relentless attack from the same Magic City U11G White team. Surrendering a second goal with only minutes remaining, Arsenal held on for a final 3-2 victory.
The victories were the second and third championships that Arsenal teams won at MYSA state champions tournaments this season, following the U19G second consecutive state championship a few weeks earlier in Billings.
